Overnight oats, the lazy way

I started doing this when mornings got busy and I kept skipping breakfast. You mix everything in a jar before bed, and in the morning it's ready. No cooking, no pan to wash.

The base (one jar)

  • 50 g rolled oats (not the instant kind)
  • 120 ml milk, any kind
  • 3 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • a small drizzle of honey or maple syrup
  • a pinch of cinnamon

How I make it

  1. Put everything in a jar or a small container with a lid.
  2. Stir well, making sure the oats at the bottom get wet too.
  3. Close it and leave it in the fridge overnight, or at least four hours.
  4. In the morning, give it another stir. If it's too thick, add a splash of milk.

Toppings I rotate

  • grated apple and a few walnuts
  • frozen berries (they thaw overnight if you add them the night before)
  • sliced banana and a spoon of peanut butter
  • a little cocoa powder stirred into the base

It keeps for about three days, so I often make two or three jars at once. It tastes better slightly cold than straight from the fridge, so I take it out when I put the kettle on.
